Ecomuseum of the Pistoia Mountains
The Ecomuseum, inaugurated in 1990, is a series of six routes in the open air, museums, teaching hubs and historical artifacts whose purpose is to introduce us to the Montagna Pistoiese area through signs which the relationship between humans and the environment have left over centuries of history.
"The history of Italian ecomuseums began with the creation, starting in 1990, of the Ecomuseum of the Pistoia Mountains..."
Proposals for schools
The Ecomuseum promotes educational activities, for schools of all levels, focusing on the energy resources of our mountains and the themes developed by the various itineraries of which it is composed.
The Itineraries
Achilli Palace
Palazzo Achilli, central information point for the Ecomuseo, is named after a rich merchant from Rome, Filippo Achilli, who in the eighteenth century bought the ancient structure, formerly belonging to the Prince of Piombino Ludovico Appiani, then extended and partly restored it.
After renovation work by the Pistoia Provincial Government in 2005, it became a venue for temporary exhibitions to explore various topics related to the history of the Montagna Pistoiese area, organising workshops for adults and children on a regular basis.
The ice route covers the history of natural ice production, which developed in the Montagna Pistoiese region between the end of the eighteenth century and the early 1900s, its main axis being located in the Valle del Reno.
Iron processing has always been of vital importance for the construction of weapons and tools for farming and construction purposes. The Iron Itinerary tells the story of steelmaking, in late medieval and pre-industrial times, on the Pistoia Mountains.
The Sacred Art route is centred around the Pieve di Popiglio, enriched during the 16th and 17th centuries by valuable Baroque and Roman artworks, donated as ex voto by a family from Popiglio who had moved to Rome, the Vannini.
This allows for a comparison between contemporary everyday life and that our ancestors, highlighting how – over just a few decades – the relationship with work and the environment has radically changed.
The Montagna Pistoiese region is a very interesting environmental asset: a living treasure, ever changing, with an exciting multi-faceted appeal.
A journey back into the history of the mountain that takes visitors to walk along the medieval route of the Via Francesca della Sambuca, starting in Pavana and ending in Sambuca Castello.
